The ElmerRadio Crystal Radio Kit is a fine performing crystal radio for those who want to build a radio that receives stations without battery or AC power. The radio gets its name from the rock crystal--usually galena--which in the past was used to detect the radio signal. Some of the very first radios were crystal radios. Most crystal radios today use a germanium diode in place of the crystal. The ElmerRadio uses a high tech VHF Schottky diode instead of a gemanium device. This diode provides remarkable sensitivity and selectivity for such a simple radio. In Strong signal areas this radio will receive several local stations with just a 20 foot indoor antenna and a convenient cold water pipe for a ground. And you won't have to buy an expensive pair of antique headphones to enjoy good reception. The ElmerRadio Crystal Radio is designed to use common stereo earbuds instead of rare old magnetic headphones. The design of this radio is similer in concept to the beloved Heath Kit crystal radio of another era. Like all ElmerRadios your crystal radio comes in a nice blue plastic enclosure.
